What else do you do with your leisure to pass the time? Walk the dog? Knit? Run marathons? Construct grandfather clocks? Collect eggshells?
I do knit (I started last year), though I try to combine the two hobbies by knitting while listening to audio books and reading knitting books. I adore Ravelry and think it is a fantastic resource.
I'm also into BookCrossing, a book tracking site (here's my bookshelf). I do lots of BookCrossing-related stuff and attend meet-ups in Oakville, ON (monthly) and Rochester, NY (occasionally).
Russell and I play lots of board games, particularly eurogames. We're on Board Game Geek where you can see our game collection (the war games are all Russell's). We also cycle when the weather is good and participate in the Ride for Roswell every year.
I also volunteer for Youth for Understanding, the exchange organization through which I went to Germany when I was in high school. I support international students, do interviews of American students applying to the program and potential host families, and I just became certified to give specialized training to other volunteers.
I didn't think to include BookCrossing in my answer. Happy BTT.
ReplyDeleteI do knit many years ago. It was tough but totally enjoyable and satisfying especially when the item's taking shape. :D
ReplyDeleteI'm always amazed at how small the world it--I live in Syracuse! And I agree with you on Ravelry--it has been a fantastic resource, although a bit dangerous as it's too easy to procrastinate by looking up potential projects/yarns. And I have only just begun to listen to audio books while knitting, but it does seem like the best combination! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's been so long since I've even visited the BookCrossing site . . . I would love to knit or crochet, but I haven't had any luck with it. I tried taking a class and teaching myself to no avail. I think it's a great hobby to have! And useful at that.
ReplyDeleteWonderful list of answers -- I'd love to learn to knit one of these days, and that's great about Youth for Understanding!
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday!
Hi Karen,
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. Is BookCrossing like LibraryThing and Shelfari? I've not heard of it.
That's so cool that you work with international exchange. Sounds like something I would enjoy.
Seems like knitting is the most popular alternative to reading among the readers. In my neighborhood, book club and knitting group get together at the same tea shop on Friday. It's pretty fun to watch them and be part of them.
ReplyDeleteI think Knitting is one of the hobby I would like to learn. One of my friend did a great job on her project(from hat,scarves,mitten,socks..etc). She did great on them :)
ReplyDeleteI have heard of Bookcrossing, but I'm not a member of the site yet :) Thanks for visiting my blog and have a good day :)
I like the idea of the Youth for Understanding stuff that you do. I am pretty terrible at knitting to be honest. My husband has a massive collection for RPG board games, but I prefer the classics like Monopoly and Game of Life. I do love Downfall though which isn't quite a board game.
ReplyDeleteBoard Games!
ReplyDeleteI don't know why I haven't been playing those of late. Since we moved almost four years ago we just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe I'll have to drag some of our board games back out.
