The Devil's Arithmetic

The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen

Synopsis:
Hannah dreads going to her family's Passover Seder — she's tired of hearing her relatives talk about the past. But when she opens the front door to symbolically welcome the prophet Elijah, she's transported to a Polish village in the year 1942, where she becomes caught up in the tragedy of the time.

Such a small book, but so powerful; it defies explanation. I can't believe that I didn't read this book sooner.

  1. What a lovely advertising for Best Of 2006 Swap! LOL
Should I take that as recommendation? (although of all so far revealed books, indeed that one is closest to my book-taste)

  2. It's a small book. I read the whole thing yesterday evening. But, I thought it was wonderful. Hard to describe, but very very good. So, yes, I guess it is a recommendation ;)

  3. My book club read this a number of years ago. The YA format wasn't a good fit for them (they're my mom's age, by and large), but the scene where the girl is walking away at the end... it's stayed with me.

I'd have joined the Best of 2006 swap, but I thought it had to be a book written in 2006?

  4. The swap on BookSwapLive is supposed to be for books published in 2006, but Milan is hosting another swap in the relay forums, in which you are supposed to offer one of the three best books you read in 2006.

  5. Okay, you're the second person in the past five minutes to try to tempt me to return to relays. Not gonna happen!

  6. Karen, this book sounds so tempting, after having recently read The Book Thief. Thanks for suggesting it.
